A
Journey Through Hallowed Ground
Mount Airy, Maryland is one
of the historic Main Street communities recognized
by the Journey Through Hallowed Ground.
On Tuesday, May 3, 2008, the
Journey Through Hallowed Ground was designated
the 38th National Heritage Area by
an act of Congress. The area stretches along
a 175 mile corridor from Pennsylvania, through
Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia, from
Gettysburg to Monticello, including nine presidential
homes, 13 National Parks, 73 National Historic
Districts, and the nation's largest collection
of Civil War sites. The region holds hundreds
of years of Native American, European American,
and African American history, including significant
sites from the French and Indian War, the
Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the
Civil War. The Journey Through Hallowed Ground
is also characterized by a string of 15 historic
Main Street communities, including Mount Airy.
The non profit JTHG Partnership
was established ten years ago to celebrate
this vital region. In addition to raising
awareness of Where America Happened, their
immediate priority is the upcoming 150th anniversary
of the Civil War, attracting thousands of
visitors to the region.
